What the methods measure
These are the techniques named on published certificates, and what each one establishes. Which techniques were applied to any particular lot is recorded on that lot's certificate.
- High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
- Separates the components of a sample by passing it under pressure through a column. Each component leaves the column at a characteristic time, and the relative size of the resulting peaks gives the purity figure — the proportion of the sample that is the target compound rather than related substances.
Reading a certificate
Purity is the proportion of the sample that is the target compound. Identity is a separate question — whether the material is the compound named at all — and is established by mass, not by the purity figure. A high purity number for the wrong molecule means nothing, which is why both appear on the certificate.
Certificates are retained rather than replaced. When a new lot is tested, its certificate is added; the previous lot's certificate stays published so material bought earlier remains verifiable.
Any field the laboratory did not report is omitted from the certificate rather than filled in with an assumed value. A blank means not reported, never a default.
